The year 2020 will be etched into many peoples' memories as one of great sorrow and loss. The pandemic that swept the world and, at the time of writing, continues to rage with little sign of abatement, has exerted a huge human toll and, through successive lockdowns, the suspension of many of our basic freedoms. It has shaken and re-formed all of our understandings of the world.
Made during the 'Covid Winter' of 2020-2021, this work is my response to the situation that we all unwillingly found ourselves in at this point in time. It was made between the two lockdowns in the UK over this winter, and its brevity is a testament to the limited amount of time available to me during this period for creative work.
I wanted to capture a sense of both the gloom of this moment, and also the removal of human interaction from our lives. I live in a semi-rural part of the UK, so lockdown to me meant cold walks through frosted forests and countryside fields. The voices of other people were replaced by the sound of wind in the trees, hearing birds sing and insects buzz in the hedgerows. Other human voices became distanced, heard as echoes in the background, acoustically distorted by walls and fences; locked out of reach. This was a moment that brought me closer to the embrace of nature, a normally calming space, but one which in this context was tinged with a somewhat eery, slightly disconcerting aftertaste.
This release is, in a way, the second part to my earlier work, Petrichor. Work on Petrichor was stopped due to the pandemic along with all other creative work (I have a 'keyworker' day-job and children to care for, so furloughing and such didn't apply to me). Together, the two perhaps tell the story of a creative flow halted; they tell of a shift in mental outlook and mindset, of physical barriers between between members of society and, most of all perhaps, an abruptly changed world.
